latrine

(lă-trēn′ )

[L. latrina, lavatrina, washroom]
A communal toilet, typically a large open receptacle excavated in the ground, often used in camping and the military.

A latrine that collects human feces in a large container. Pit latrines may range from a simple slit trench to a complicated system with ventilation. They are the least expensive method of separating feces from people and, when properly constructed, decrease the spread of disease by preventing flies from spreading microorganisms between feces and food.
