[ Matthias de L'Obel, Lobel, Flemish botanist, 1538-1616 + -ia]
A genus of more than 400 species of flowering plants, distributed worldwide primarily in tropical and warm temperate regions. Many species contain the alkaloid lobeline. Several species have been used in alternative and traditional medicine.
