[Gr. ixōdēs, sticky, clammy, like birdlime]
A genus of hard-bodied ticks of the family Ixodidae, many of which are parasitic on humans and animals. In the U.S., Ixodes ticks are vectors for several severe illnesses, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Lyme disease.
