[ethyl + -ene]
A flammable, explosive, colorless gas, CH2CH2, prepared from alcohol by dehydration. It is present in illuminating gas. It is colorless and has a sweetish taste but a pungent, foul odor. It is lighter than air and diffuses when liberated.
