carditis
(kar-dīt′ĭs)
[cardio- + -itis]
Inflammation of the layers of the heart. It usually involves two of the following: pericardium, myocardium, or endocardium.
Coxsackie carditis
Carditis or pericarditis that may occur in infections with enteroviruses of the Coxsackie groups, and also with echovirus groups.
Lyme carditis
The acute onset of atrioventricular conduction block, often in association with myocarditis, in a patient with Lyme disease. It is treated with antibiotics. Temporary cardiac pacing is occasionally required.
rheumatic carditis
Inflammation of cardiac tissue as a result of acute rheumatic fever. Mitral insufficiency is a prominent feature, and aortic insufficiency is sometimes present as well.
