A form of treatment, used initially by those who abuse alcohol or other substances, that relies on social support, interpersonal motivation, abstinence from the addictive substance, and spirituality. Over 200 self-help organizations employ 12-step principles for recovery. These include compulsions for gambling, hoarding of food, overeating, and sex. Ancillary groups have also been created, e.g., Al-Anon and Nar-Anon, for friends and family members of alcoholics and addicts.
