Pathology
Metabolism to numerous by-products including alpha-napthol, a potent hemolytic agent.
Symptoms
Fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, hemolysis, pallor, jaundice, cyanosis.
Emergency Measures
Activated charcoal; IV hydration and urinary alkalinization; transfusions for hemolysis.
Comments
Hemolysis is acute and severe in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Naphthalene is used in mothballs and toilet bowl cleaners, but less toxic agents are available.
