[Pronunciation]

One of a group of polysaccharides that differ from cellulose in that they may be hydrolyzed by dilute mineral acids, and from other polysaccharides in that they are not readily digested by amylases.
The group includes pentosans, galactosans (agar-agar), and pectins.
