(băs-ĭ-trā′sĭn)
[Pronunciation]
An antibiotic obtained from a strain of Bacillus subtilis.
Its antibacterial actions are similar to those of penicillin. It treats gram-positive cocci and bacilli and some gram-negative organisms. Because bacitracin is toxic when used parenterally, it is usually applied topically in ointment form.
