[Gr. apoplessein, to cripple by a stroke]

1. Copious effusion of blood into an organ, as in abdominal apoplexy or pulmonary apoplexy.
2. An outmoded term for stroke, esp. a stroke in which a blood vessel in the brain ruptures.
