acarbose

(ăk′ăr-bōz)

An oral antidiabetic, alpha glucosidase inhibitor that delays the digestion of carbohydrates, therefore facilitating control of blood glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
It can be used to treat type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes mellitus. Many patients treated with this agent develop abdominal bloating and gas.
