Collembola

(ko-lem′bŏ-lă)
[Gr. kolla, glue + Gr. embolos, embolon a ram, wedge]
A subclass of animals that superficially resemble insects, found within the subphylum Hexapoda. Members of Collembola are frequently found in leaf litter and other decaying matter, where they are one of the main biological agents for the control and the dissemination of soil microorganisms. Occasionally they may infest humans, e.g., on the scalp.
