DEET

(dēt )

N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, a potent, broad-spectrum insect repellent. Insect repellents reduce the risk of exposure to fleas, mosquitos, ticks, and other arthropods that transmit infections to human beings.
Although topically applied DEET is generally safe when applied to the skin, it should not come in contact with plastics, which it may dissolve. DEET is not recommended for use by children under the age of 2.
