Alphavirus

(al′fă-vī′rŭs )

A genus of the family of Togaviridae viruses (e.g. Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, Western Equine Encephalitis virus) transmitted to humans by mosquito bite. Alphaviruses have a single-stranded RNA genome. Infection may cause fever, joint pains, rash, or central nervous system infection.
