The treatment of genetic illnesses, metabolic diseases, cancers, and some infections by introducing nucleic acid sequences into the chromosomes of diseased cells. The goal of gene therapy is to modify the genetic instructions of the diseased cells, so that the cells will express a protein or enzyme that modifies or treats the disease.
