Loxosceles reclusa, 3/8-in (10 mm) long spider native to North America. The venom of the brown recluse spider is toxic and can be lethal. It may produce a large area of necrosis at the site of the bite.
Dapsone, antivenins, and steroids are often used to treat the envenomation; however, before using dapsone, the patient should be tested for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Tetanus prophylaxis should be administered.
