(ă-sĕt″ă-mĭn′ō-fĕn)
[Pronunciation]
A drug with antipyretic and analgesic effects similar to those of aspirin, but with limited anti-inflammatory or antirheumatic effects.
It is used to treat mild to moderate pain. Unlike aspirin and related drugs, it is not irritating to the stomach.
Overdose may cause necrosis of the liver or fulminant hepatic failure. An acetaminophen level should routinely be checked on all patients who come to an emergency department because of medication overdose.
